Every June, the ancient Loire town of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil welcomes dancers, musicians, craftsmen and artisans from Central Asia to participate in the Les Orientales Festival, which all the family can enjoy.
Various venues around the town, including the splendid 7th-century Abbey de Saint Florent, host concerts, markets, dances and more in the last two weeks of June.
Expect dance, folklore and music groups hailing from India to China, screenings of documentaries and films about Central Asia and poetry recitals. Concerts are ticketed but there is an Oriental market to explore for free.
Past events welcomed drummers from Japan, Thappattam dancers from India, Mongolian chanting, DJ sets from Zanzibar and mystical singing from the Rajastani desert, among many others.
